Happy Friday, everyone!
Those of you who know the site understand that we here at Daddy’s Little Miracle aren’t afraid of a bit of controversy. We willfully provoke other parenting bloggers and we’re not afraid to take on the big sexy t-shirt companies.
So this week in The Friday Funzone Five, we’re tackling racism.
Racism’s very hot in Australia right now. Horrible things keep happening and the Sydney Morning Herald was forced to ask its readers, “Are You a Casual Racist?”
Doesn’t matter. Hopefully you get it sorted out.
Of course, American racism is still alive and kicking, but it’s different. Maybe it’s less casual? I’m not sure.
A 13-year-old girl called a rugby player with Aboriginal heritage an “ape” during a game.
She apparently didn’t know she was being racist.
So they’re going to recirculate anti-racism material in schools.
Then this guy made a joke about the whole thing on the radio.
In Australia, the bus is a very popular place to throw some racism around. In April, some teenage girls were kicked of a bus for yelling obscenities at an Asian woman.
And the other day, an Asian guy was told to leave the country in very unpleasant terms.
If you’re Australian, you might remember the Hey Hey It’s Saturday! black face situation. Or, as the AV Club headline labelled it, Hey Hey It’s Blackface. (They eventually changed the headline to G’day, Blackface!, which is still fantastic.)
A lot of people were saying that it’s okay for Australians to use blackface because it’s not part of this country’s history like it is in the US or the UK. Turns out that’s wrong, according to this Aboriginal perspective.
And this is a great column in Vice – This Week in Racism. A fun reminder of how racist people are.
Also, this will never stop being upsetting: The fact that the Washington professional football team is still called the Redskins.
And then this happened with a Cheerios commercial. People are animals.
Now get out there and have a great weekend!
